Africa is rich in natural resources, but the struggle for wealth becomes harder day by day. Consumers in the West demand more products containing raw materials from the African continent. And consumers in rapidly growing markets in India and China does too. Meanwhile, many African countries exporting natural resources are still poor.
Africa's wealth can contribute to prosperity and development. Yet, money that could be invested in hospitals and school books find their way to foreigners' pockets or tax havens.
The project 'Unrestrained Consumption' is part of the overall theme "Out of Africa" where DanWatch puts focus on who benefits from Africa's natural resources. What are the consequences for the population and the environment? And what are the opportunities for using natural resource revenues for development that benefits the local population?
